We're working hard to reduce fly-tipping, it's a criminal offence and we are taking a zero-tolerance approach by issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice or prosecuting anyone we find committing this crime. In August, boxes of waste were found dumped in Houghton Road, Bedford. The person that dumped them has had to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice. The Council's Environmental Crime Officers attended the scene and found evidence identifying the offender as living in a nearby street. The woman chose to pay the Fixed Penalty Notice, instead of attending an interview with Council officers under caution. The Fixed Penalty Notice for fly-tipping is £400, which can be reduced to £300 with an early payment discount.Fly-tipping can damage our natural habitats, pose health risks, and create an eyesore in our communities, there is no excuse for it. The cost of cleaning up after fly-tippers is an unnecessary burden on taxpayers and we will continue to raise awareness that it is criminal and unacceptable. We're encouraging local residents to work with us and report fly-tipping as soon as they can. This will give officers the best chance of catching those who have committed the crime, it can be reported https://lnkd.in/eABJpGjY.If you have extra waste please take it to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Barkers Lane, Bedford or arrange for a licensed waste carrier to collect it - don’t leave it on the street or by litter bins. #flytipping

Did you know that in the UK, Fire and Rescue services attend more than 300 major fire incidents at recycling and waste facilities each year because people put flammable items in their bins? That is why Environmental Services Association has launched a fire hazard campaign to raise awareness on these risks. Throwing hazardous items in the general rubbish or recycling is dangerous and puts lives at risk. We all have an important role to play in preventing recycling and waste fires by ensuring that we dispose of flammable items responsibly. Common culprits are batteries, vapes, BBQ ashes and nitrous oxide cannisters. Don’t cause a #bincident this summer. If you’re not sure what to do with something, check with your local authority first or take it to your nearest civic amenity site. #California produces millions of tons of #hazardouswaste every year – toxic detritus that can leach into groundwater or blow into the air. It’s waste that can explode, spark fires, eat through metal containers, destroy #ecosystems and sicken people. It’s dangerous material that we have come to rely on and ignore – the #flammableliquids used to cleanse metal parts before painting, the #lead and #acid in old car batteries, even the shampoos that can kill fish.It all needs to go somewhere. But over the past four decades, California’s facilities to manage hazardous waste have dwindled. What’s left is a tattered system of older sites with a troubling history of safety violations and #pollutedsoil and #groundwater, a CalMatters investigation has found. Many are operating on expired permits. And most are located in communities of color, often ones with high rates of poverty, despite #environmentaljustice laws meant to ensure that the most disadvantaged don’t also face the greatest #pollution exposure.

🔥 A wake-up call to the dangers of irresponsible battery disposal!🔋 A recent fire at a recycling centre in Pitsea, Essex, lasting two days, was traced back to an accidentally discarded lithium battery in a skip. The repercussions were significant, with 250 tonnes of materials ablaze and a massive firefighting effort of 52 crews attending! The fire, which finally subsided on Sunday, underscored the critical need for proper lithium battery disposal. A seemingly innocent mistake resulted in a colossal impact on the environment and local community. This incident emphasises the dangers of tossing lithium batteries into general waste or skips. Dispose of them properly through designated recycling channels to prevent accidents and protect our surroundings.🗣️ A Message from Craig McLellan, Essex County Fire and Rescue: "I'd like to stress the importance of disposing of your lithium-ion batteries properly, not in a skip or with domestic household waste. The impact of this fire on the business has been huge, caused by irresponsible disposal. Always check with your local authority for suitable battery recycling arrangements in your area."Be informed, be responsible! Let's spread awareness about the correct disposal of lithium batteries to avoid such incidents in the future. Check with your local authorities for the right recycling methods.#BatterySafety #RecycleResponsibly #EnvironmentalAwareness #HubbaLtd

The highly unusual reactions at Los Angeles County's two largest landfills - Chiquita Canyon landfill and Sunshine Canyon landfill - have raised serious questions about the region's long-standing approach to waste disposal and its aging dumps. These incidents have impaired pollution control systems, allowingtoxic gasesand polluted water to migrate into unwanted areas. They have also triggered thousands of odor complaints, dozens of environmental penalties and renewed calls to shutter the landfills.#landfill #wastemanagement #health #pollution #airquality #humanity #globaleconomy #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/gW95kcTu.

Our Riverkeeper, Trey, testified at the DC Department of Public Works (DPW) Performance and Oversight Hearing yesterday, sharing some of Anacostia Riverkeeper's concerns and hopes for DPW's work. The below actions and policies would improve waste diversion from the Anacostia River, helping achieve a #TrashFree river for all.We are calling on DC DPW to:- Support a beverage container recycling refund program.- Encourage the Mayor's Office to release the District Zero Waste Report and Waste Diversion Reports, whose publications have been continually delayed.- Continue improving their Helping Hands program, a great interaction between the agency and the community, including more access to roll off dumpsters for large trash cleanups.- Institute an extended producer responsibility (EPR) system and better cleanup and processing for tires.- Enact a more transparent engagement process in the development of a waste diversion campus at the Benning Rd DPW facility and we would like to join the Advisory Group.- Improve efforts to decrease salt pollution from DPW’s road salt applications.PC: DC Environmental Network#TrashFreeDC #PlasticFreeDC #AnacostiaRiver

Man Charged In Connection With Deadly Fire 🔥 At Elizabeth Waste Facility.I call it F#$% it recycling. Some call it the magic 🪄 dumpster. No matter what you call it, throwing hazardous materials in your waste/recycling bin or dumpster is illegal and can lead to devastating effects for #waste and #recycling workers! "The business owner unlawfully threw away more than 9,000 pounds of extremely flammable dry shampoo aerosol cans into a dumpster that he rented. The dumpster was then taken to the #WasteManagement facility on Julia Street in Elizabeth. Within minutes of the aerosol cans being dumped out of the dumpster at the facility, a multiple-alarm #fire broke out and resulted in the death of facility worker Czeslaw Solarz, 69, of Union Township.""This case provides a stark illustration of how the irresponsible and improper disposal of #hazardouswaste can have a clear, devastating and immediate impact on public health and #safety," said Platkin. "This careless action resulted in a large quantity of highly flammable materials going into the #wastestream, effectively sending the workers at this facility in Elizabeth a #firebomb 💣 that was waiting to go off. And when it did, it had lethal consequences."Whether it is done to try and avoid paying for proper disposal or to take the easy way out to save time and hassle of finding the proper place for disposal, actions do have consequences that are starting to be taken more seriously by the authorities. We can do better folks! https://lnkd.in/gCCZtMVh

You don't want to cause a #Bincident do you?All of us have a crucial part to play inpreventing #recycling and #wastefires byensuring that we dispose of flammable itemsresponsibly. Every year, #fireandrescue services have toattend at least 300 significant fires at recyclingand waste management facilities acrossEngland. However, the total number of smallerun-reported fire incidents occurring acrossthe sector is estimated to be significantlyhigher than this, since hundreds of #fires areextinguished by operators before the need tocall the emergency services. Each of these fires has the potential to turninto a major incident if not dealt with swiftlyand this situation is exacerbated by the hot, dry, summer months when fires spread morequickly. Fires at recycling and #wastemanagementfacilities, or in #collectionvehicles andcontainers, not only put lives at risk, but candisrupt vital services and #infrastructure; causemillions of pounds of damage to public assetsand damage the #environment. But membersof the public can help to reduce these risks bydisposing of flammable items responsibly. This is why we have launched our #SummerFires Campaign! https://lnkd.in/enG6Er5hTo help avoid recycling and waste fires, wemust all individually take responsibility forensuring that any item or substance that couldpotentially cause a fire is always disposed ofusing proper #disposal channels and nevermixed with the general rubbish or otherconventional recycling. #Bincident #WasteFires #Recycling #WasteDisposal #responsibilities #CorrectDisposal | National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) | CIWM | letsrecycle.com | Materials Recycling World |
