What is a Lesson Plan?

A lesson plan is a document prepared by teachers and instructors that outlines lesson objectives, activities and tasks, resources, materials, timeline and more.

A lesson plan could be made for a day, a week, a unit or the entire lesson.

Its main purpose is to help both teachers and students keep track of the topics or modules that need to be covered in a lesson.

It also helps students stay on top of all the required materials, such as books, apps or stationery, that are needed during the course of the lesson.

Lesson plans are also helpful for communicating course objectives to students upfront so they know what to expect.

A lesson plan is normally printed out and distributed among the students by the course instructor. Teachers can also save lesson plans as PDF files and share them digitally with students via email, a school portal or another study materials sharing platform like StuDocu.

How Do You Write an Effective Lesson Plan?

Creating an effective lesson plan is easy. But not all lesson plans are the same.

Before you start writing a lesson plan for your class, you need to fully understand the purpose of your course, its requirements and the individual needs of your students.

This will help you choose the best layout for your class, add all the necessary sections and create a lesson plan that’s clear and easy to follow.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to writing an effective lesson plan.

Step 1: Determine the Scope of Your Lesson Plan

First things first. You need to know whether you’re creating a plan for the entire lesson, or just a day, a week or a unit.

This obviously depends on a number of factors.

Some teachers prefer distributing weekly lesson plans that are very specific, detailed and help students focus on the short-term objectives and tasks of a lesson.

Weekly lesson plans are also helpful for gathering regular feedback, and pivoting or improving as needed in the future.

Others might use multimodal learning lesson plans to help guide the student through all the different platforms or learning tools they’ll need to complete their curriculum.

A detailed lesson plan for the entire course is also an effective way to keep students informed about the core objectives of the overall lesson and the topics that are going to be covered.

It can also motivate them to do some additional reading before class using any recommended resources. Another benefit of creating an overview lesson plan is that it gives students time to gather any materials they'll need in the future.

If you’re having trouble formatting your lesson plan in terms of categories or sections, get help from Visme’s AI Writer. Tell the AI writing tool what your lesson is about, the time span it covers and other information like lesson objectives or weekly goals. This tool saves you time and sets you on the right track quickly.

Step 2: Identify Key Learning Objectives

When you’ve finalized the scope of your lesson plan, it’s time to write down the objectives and goals of your lesson.

Answer the following:

  • What can students expect to learn from this lesson?
  • What do I want students to do at the end of this class?
  • How will students be able to apply their learnings in the real world?

Remember, this step is not about the topics you’ll be covering in your lesson. It’s about how your students will benefit from learning about those topics.

You can create a list or table of key learning outcomes with a short description for each one that explains it nicely and briefly.

Identifying lesson objectives will help students know what to expect from your lesson and why they’re here. It will also keep you, as a teacher, from losing sight of why you’re teaching the lesson in the first place.

Step 3: Plan Specific Activities and Tasks

The next step is to focus on the actionable side of things — what exactly are your students going to do in the lesson?

Plan out the specific activities and tasks involved in class. This could include opening discussions, workbook activities, readings, asking questions, presenting or even watching a video for educational purposes.

Step 4: List the Required Materials

If your lesson requires students to bring or use specific items like stationery, notes, books, apps or any other tools, make sure you list them in your lesson plan.

This can help students get their hands on important items timely. For example, they might need to buy them from a store or borrow from the school.

You can also add any recommended resources in this section, such as websites, books, libraries or anything else students can use to supplement their studies.

Step 5: Create a Timeline

To organize all your lesson activities and make sure all topics get enough attention, you need to set realistic time slots.

The kind of timeline you create depends on how your lesson plan is structured. If you’re writing a weekly lesson plan, for example, you can divide activities and tasks by day.

You can also add time slots for each activity. For example:

  • 9:00 - 9:30: Opening discussion
  • 9:30 - 9:45: Reading activity
  • 9:45 - 10:00: Questions

This will help you and your students stay on track to complete all topics instead of spending too much time on one topic and being forced to leave out the others.

Step 6: Leave Space for Notes and Feedback

Don’t forget to add an empty section in your lesson plan for students to take notes and write down important discussion points.

You can also use this section as a space for feedback. This is especially useful for daily, weekly and even monthly lesson plans.

At the end of each session, students will be required to give feedback and leave comments on the overall lesson and the instructor.

This insightful information can help teachers plan even better lessons in the future.

How to Create a Lesson Plan Template

When it comes to creating a lesson plan template, you’ll need Visme. Create your account today and easily design branded and reusable lesson plan templates in minutes from a base template or the one generated with AI.

Step #1: Log in to Visme And Get Started with a Design

29 Lesson Plan Templates for Teachers & Online Instructors (31)

Log in to your Visme dashboard to access all the content-creation tools. Then, choose one of the two design options for your lesson plan; selecting a pre-designed template from the gallery or using the AI Document Generator.

29 Lesson Plan Templates for Teachers & Online Instructors (32)

You can view the pre-designed templates by clicking the Create New button, then Documents and Lesson Plans. Select one and click Edit.

From the dashboard, you can also generate a lesson plan with AI. Click on the Generate with AI button at the top right and prompt the AI chatbot to generate a lesson plan template in one of several style suggestions.

Step #2: Apply your Color Theme

29 Lesson Plan Templates for Teachers & Online Instructors (33)

Once you’ve selected your template, head to the editor to customize all the visual elements in your design. First, apply a color theme that matches your school or institution.

To change the color scheme in the template, click on Color Themes. Click on any theme to apply it to the template. You can create new color themes through the My Brands area in the dashboard.

Create three or four themes using your brand colors, arranging them in different orders. The order of the colors in your palette determines where they are applied in the template design. Try all your brand color themes on a template and pick your favorite one.

Now you can start working on your fonts and text properties. You can group-select all the text that needs a font change and use the Edit button at the top left of the editor.

Step #3: Personalize the Content

Once your template’s color is set, it’s time to personalize the content.

29 Lesson Plan Templates for Teachers & Online Instructors (34)

First, apply your branding by adding assets that won’t change every time the template is used, like the school logo in the header or the name of your academic institution at the bottom of the page.

Lock these elements so you, or the teacher, don’t have to worry about them. The lock function is in the drop-down when you select and right-click any element.

Pro Tip: When creating your lesson plan templates, include dynamic fields in the content design. Create dynamic fields for content that doesn’t change, like the year. Then, the next year, all you have to do is change the year’s custom field and all lesson plans, including the template, get updated automatically.

For the content you adjust with each use, like a specific time frame or the lesson plan details, leave them unlocked so it’s easy to change.

As for visual elements, you can decide what icons or images to include according to the lesson plan itself. But make editing easier by suggesting icon placement with an icon from the gallery. The same applies for images and other design elements in your lesson plan: Add them in, but leave them unlocked so you can change them easily according to your use case.

Go beyond the basics, take advantage of all the design features Visme has to offer and make your lesson plan template unique. Add customizable animated characters, 3D graphics and other media like videos or audio.

Step #4: Save as a Template and Share

29 Lesson Plan Templates for Teachers & Online Instructors (35)

Now, save the final design as a template in the Visme workspace and reuse it for a syllabus or yearly lesson plan document. You can also share this template with anyone on your team to use at any time.

Invite users to the workspace and they’ll be able to use the template however you’ve set it up for them. You have the option to lock certain elements, making it easier to edit.

Share the lesson plan as a digital and printable PDF or any of these other formats:

  • Live URL
  • PNG or JPG
  • PowerPoint
  • A SCORM or xAPI file
  • An HTML code to be embedded in a website or email
